Mount Rainier rises 14,000 feet above sea level and is an emblem of Washington's landscape. Although it is an active volcano, Mount Rainier is covered with glaciers that feed six major rivers. Just a few miles from Seattle, Mount Rainier National Park offers unique hiking and mountaineering opportunities.(On a clear day, you can see the summit from downtown). In the spring, a variety of wildflower meadows surround the icy volcano, while old-growth forests shelter the lower slopes of Mount Rainier. Most trails are open from late May through early October, with incredible views and access to a wealth of trails and other sites. While it may be tempting to try to see everything in one day, if you stay longer, you'll be better able to enjoy the park.
